Perigee

If you have trouble sleeping over the weekend, it is probably due to the moonlight. The full moon on 10 and 11 Jan is the biggest and brightest of 2009.
Astronomers call this a 'perigee moon' because it happened at perigee, the side of the moon's elliptical orbit cloest to Earth. See diagram below for a simple explanation. ![]() The next perigee moon will occur on 30 Jan 2010.
