If you have trouble sleeping over the weekend, it is probably due to the moonlight. The full moon on 10 and 11 Jan is the biggest and brightest of 2009

Astronomers call this a 'perigee moon' because it happened at perigee, the side of the moon's elliptical orbit closest to Earth. See diagram below for a simple explanation.

The next perigee moon will occur on 30 Jan 2010. This is a special date because not only will it be a perigee moon, it will also be a blue moon (the second full moon in a calendar month). Mark your calendar!

Playing with Food

Don't play with your food, our parents would scold us when we were young. That was exactly what I did today when I attended a food photography workshop jointly organised by Canon Singapore and Dr Leslie Tay of ieatishootipost.sg

As photography was the primary interest to the participants, food took a back seat. No one was touching their food for at least half an hour. One participant literally took the cake when her food was still untouched after I had the dessert and complimentary coffee!

Seventh Heaven

I have yet to meet anyone who say they do not like ice-cream. So when I read not one but two blogs mentioning this little gem of a find, I just had to go down and try it myself.

I was confident Seventh Heaven was at Marketing Institute of Singapore in Raeburn Park so I did not wrote down the address or a contact number. The place was deserted save for a few students and some security personnel as it was a Saturday afternoon. I was fearful (did I come to the wrong place) when two different groups of students did not know about an ice-cream parlour in the school compound. Lucky for me, the security personnel knew about the place and showed me the way.

I was surprised a second time when I peeked into the small parlour and did not see any customer. Lynn did not want to go in at first but I threw a small husband-tantrum and we decided to go in since we were already there. A group of 3 ladies also came in after us; apparently they had took a taxi all the way here and was surprised that the students in the school did not know about this place too.

As Lynn did not want any alcohol-laden ice-cream, we tried a chocolate and lychee-martini ice-cream which included a brandied cherry. Although most of the ice-cream here are infused with alcohol, it was slight and quite suitable for kids as well. I finished the ice-cream with a shot of Extreme Chocolate, literally melted Amedei chocolate so we were warned twice that it is very thick.

he ice-cream and melted chocolate were good and the only letdown for me was the seating. They only had bar stools and small stools, no low-backed chairs or sofas so one could not stay long and chit-chat among friends. Do note that Seventh Heaven is closed on Sundays.

Today is Chien Ming's birthday. We went to Swa Garden Teochew Restaurant for dinner to celebrate the occasion. We had the usual Teochew cuisine and a cake. The restaurant offered to play us a birthday song but we declined politely.

Although it was Chien Ming's birthday, it was I who received a present from her as my birthday was 2 days ago. Embarass to say that Lynn and I did not get her a present. I say being with love ones and good friends are the best presents (lame excuses).

Lynn's Birthday

It was Lynn's birthday yesterday and we went to a nice place called Absoulte Haven at Prinsep Street for dinner. Food was good and service was attentive. A good place to bring your loved one and good friends.

I nearly could not celebrate the occasion as I had a Meet-the-Parents session in the morning as well as babysit a group of students cheerleaders at the NDP event till 7.30pm. I was indeed tired but seeing Lynn after melted away all the weariness from my body.

After dinner, we went to a friend's place for the customary birthday song and cake routine. The cake was simple but delicious. I much prefer a simple and nice cake to those fanciful ones.

Karen Cheng is a mother of two who blogs at www.karencheng.com.au.

'Doing the Karen Cheng' is a viral which was reputedly started by Karen who occassionaly take a photo of herself in front of a mirror. Now when someone takes a photo of themselves in front of a mirror, he or she is 'doing the karen cheng'. Get it?

Karen is currently in Singapore celebrating her birthday and at the same time raising funds for the Singapore Red Cross. The idea is to donate S$10 and 'Do the Karen Cheng' with her.

I first know Claudia online when she posted an article on the National Library way back in August 2005 when she was still a teacher. Finding a refreshing voice and her passion for life, I contined to read her blog 'limedesign' and added her as a contact in Flickr!

The first time we met was at a friend's birthday but as life would have it, we did not recognise each other till later when I saw her in my friend's Facebook account. We finally met 'officially' at a PHP user-group meetup in February 2008 and the above photo was taken at the event.

Why the sudden nostalgia? Oh I forgot to mention that she appeared in the national papers today as blogged. Cheers Claudia.

The Absolut vodka company apologized Saturday for an ad campaign depicting the southwestern U.S. as part of Mexico amid angry calls for a boycott by U.S. consumers.

Bangkok Holiday

I went to Bangkok again last week for 4 days, almost seems like an annual pilgrimage now. As I was looking for a relaxing time shopping and eating, I did not bring along my digital SLR as I was not looing at photography at all. The photo above was taken at Chatuchak Weekend Market with a cute Thai girl selling dried titbits. How can one resist buying from such a girl, I do not know. The shop she tended is Soontorn at Section 19 Soi 8.

I also bought t-shirts that were designed with airlines logo. I was pleasantly surprised when I enquired about some of the obscure airlines and the store-owner spoke to his co-owner in Japanese. Apparently, the two owners were from Japan. Imgaine 2 Japanese who spoke little Thai opening a shop selling self-designed airlines logo t-shirts at chatuchak. Their shop is at Section 14 Soi 22/5 Shop 100.

I went down to Chomp Chomp to try popiah from 01-19 I-Chai Food Speciality when I saw them recently on a television show. Their claim to fame was their various types of popiah like the wasabi popiah and shisamo popiah above.

The popiah did not live up to my expectation! They were one of the worst I have tasted. The moral of the story is never believe in hype. Luckily, I had a plate of Fried Hokkien Mee as well and it was one of the better ones. The stall is 01-20 Kim's Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee, just next to the terrible popiah.

Attended the Library@Orchard Moving on Party. The Library@Orchard is officially closed after 8 years of service. The library was a sort of refuge for me whenever Lynn and I went shopping at Orchard. Lynn would go around shopping at Orchard while would be at the Library till she calls for dinner. So I was a little sad when I heard it would be closed. Now I got to find another place to hang out when I am at Orchard.
